The Public & the Private Opens March 11th

(SCENE) Metrospace is pleased to present a new exhibition called "The Public & the Private" which opens March 11th and runs through April 17th.

Please join us for an opening reception on Friday, March 11th, from 6-9. Music will be provided by special guest DJ, and artist, George Rahme.

The opening reception is free and open to the public.

The Public & the Private features work by photographer Ellie Brown and filmmaker/performance artist Camille Thoman. The exhibit includes work from Brown and Thoman's collaborative project "BAG."

Thoman conceived of the concept and Brown is the visual artist.

BAG is a photographic installation exploring the duality between the way people characterize themselves in public, and the private contents of their handbags. This is depicted by a photograph of the subject against a neutral background, in their everyday clothes, with their bag, purse, briefcase or any other container they carry on a daily basis. The portrait of their public face is juxtaposed with the person’s more private self, represented by the actual contents of their bag.

BAG allows the viewer a glimpse into the private world of another individual, revealing aspects of this person’s organizational habits, vanities and preoccupations.

The Private & the Public also features work by local artists Aaron Curtner, Lynn Gareau, Christopher Gideon, Susan Hensel, John Kroneman, Robert Park and Eric Robinson.

And, finally, the exhibit includes a cross-section of email correspondence between two lifelong friends--both poets, avid readers, and former competitive chess players--and a selection of rejection letters received by local writer, Gavin Craig.
