Jenny Hoyston, best known as the singer/guitarist/trumpeter of no-wave/post-punk San Francisco band Erase Errata, brings her unique audio-visual solo show Paradise Island to (SCENE) Metrospace. By incorporating electronica, psychedelic flourishes, spoken word and film into her live performance, Hoyston harnesses the muscular grooviness of her freshly released solo album "Isle Of" (on Southern Records, September 2007). Part of a long line of West Coast punk iconoclasts and innovators, Hoyston is joined on tour by sometime collaborator Adrienne Anemone.
In addition to performing with Paradise Island on organ, Adrienne will also include her own solo performance with "puppets, magic or song." An engaging alternative indie and folk musician in her own right, Adrienne Anemone's propulsive classically-tinged recordings are often peppered with cellos and glockenspiel. Expect bizarre theatrics and bewitching vocals in equal measure.
With nearly a decade and a half of group improvisation behind them, the ever-morphing Lansing-based Rattling Wall Collective continues to provide a forward-thinking musical high water mark in the mid-Michigan music scene. The recent self-released "Citizen Wall" CD displays a band that harnesses its own flux into structured passages of unpredictable flight and psychic weight, finding strange geometries in the formless.
Opening the evening will be self-described "primitive folk-bassist" Stargrazer, whose performances have taken on an increasingly unpredictable quality over the past year. Often armed only with an acoustic bass guitar, Stargrazer harnesses drones and pop song structures to write tunes that won't settle comfortably into either the folk or the punk canon.
