Poetry Contest

The Center for Poetry in the Residential College in the Arts and Humanities at Michigan State University, in collaboration with (Scene) Metrospace and the MSU Public Humanities Collaborative, will sponsor their first poetry contest in March of 2009.

Entries should be inspired by works on exhibit in “The Little Big Show,” or by the theme of the exhibit, which will run from March 13 through April 26, 2009.

Poet Diane Wakoski from the Department of English at MSU will serve as the contest judge. The deadline for submissions is April 3.

The contest awards, provided by the Public Humanities Collaborative, will be $100 for the winning poem, $50 for second place, and $25 for third place.

“The Little Big Show” is open to the public at (Scene) Metrospace on Thurs 2-5; Fri. 2-6; Sat. 2-6 & Sun. 12-4.

To conclude the contest, a reading of selected entries will be held April 24, 2009 at 7:00PM, at which time the winners of the poetry contest will be announced.

Entries may consist of no more than 3 poems per poet.

Entries may be based on one or several works of art or on the theme of the exhibit.

Contest guidelines:

1. No more than 3 entries per poet. Poems may all be inspired by individual works of art or by the theme of the show.

2. Poems in any form, fixed or free verse, may be submitted. No length requirement.

3. Contestants must not identify themselves in any way on any of the poems. Along with the submission include a cover sheet with the poet’s name, address, phone #, and email address. Also in the cover sheet include the number of poems submitted and the title of each poem. Any poem bearing the author’s name will be disqualified.

4. Poems may be submitted electronically to cpoetry@msu.edu or mailed to The Center for Poetry, Residential College in the Arts and Humanities, C210 Snyder Hall, Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan 48823. Poems may also be dropped off in the mailbox of the Center for Poetry in Room C210 Snyder Hall.

5. All entries are due by 5:00 pm on Friday, April 3, 2009.
