The gallery will unveil its first exhibition of the 2012 calendar year with a free public opening on Friday, January 13th, from 6-9 p.m. The exhibition is called A Michigan State University Showcase, and it features MSU artists Jon Anthony, Yareth Fernandez, Ryan Groendyk, Megan Mack, April Matthews, Volodymyr Shcherbak, Jacob Varty, and Rebekah Zurenko.

The work is fantastic!

If you are interested in seeing the exhibit early and helping the gallery, join us for our 4th annual benefit party!

You are invited to join us on Thursday, January 12th, from 6-8 p.m. for a sneak peek of the exhibition at our 4th annual benefit party. The benefit party is a ticketed event that features wine and catered desserts, live music, good company and great art.

Pay at the door. Cost: a tax deductible donation of $50 per single; $75 per couple; cash or checks only, payable to City of East Lansing.

(SCENE) Metrospace is currently accepting submissions for an exhibition that would open March 9th, 2012, and close on April 15th.

The deadline for submissions is 5:00 p.m., February 10th, 2012.

There is no theme. All types of artwork will be considered. The exhibition that is being created will be a small and limited group show that will attempt to showcase a generous slice of each selected artists' work.

Tala Rasa: An Evening of Percussion Music

(SCENE) Metrospace, 110 Charles St., will host a concert of contemporary percussion music featuring Tala Rasa on Saturday, Jan. 21.

The doors will open at 7 p.m. and music will begin at 7:30 p.m. Admission at the door is $3/student and $5/general public.

Tala Rasa consists of Brendan Betyn, James Beauton, Gwendolyn Burgett-Thrasher and Steve Wulff. During the concert, these four individual musicians will collaborate to create an evening of contemporary percussion music. The first half of the concert will have three solo pieces and a duet piece. The second half will consist of a 30-minute long piece bringing together two of the collaborators.

A percussion instrument is any object which produces a sound when hit with an implement or when it is shaken, rubbed, scraped, or struck in a way that sets the object into vibration. The evening will consist of four individual musicians coming together and collaborating to create about 90 minutes of contemporary percussion music. The repertoire Tala Rasa will be performing focuses mainly on the discovery of new sounds from "found" or "discovered" instruments, such as clay flower pots, steel pipes, and wooden slats. More traditional percussion instruments will be integrated into the program as well in order to create a full musical experience.

Bedlam

(SCENE) Metrospace will unveil its latest exhibit, “Bedlam,” on Friday, November 4 at a free public reception from 6-9 p.m.

Members of the community are encouraged to attend.

“Bedlam,” to be featured in the space Nov. 4-Dec. 11, is a visual exploration created by local photographer Robert Turney of 19th century mental patient imagery using the tintype photographic process. The project includes text discovered by Michigan State University professor Stephen Rachman.

Robert Turney is an East Lansing resident. He works from home. He specializes in the tintype pinhole photography process.

Stephen Rachman is the Associate Chairperson for Graduate Studies and Associate Professor of 19th century American literature at Michigan State University.

This will be (SCENE) Metrospace’s sixth and final art exhibition of 2011.

The opening reception will also feature a forum facilitated by Michigan State University students from the Residential College of Arts and Humanities. The discussion will begin at 7:30 p.m. The discussion will attempt to generate ideas concerning the definition of a creative space and new ways in which East Lansing can become a more creative place.

GENERATIONS: a night of poetry and music

On Friday, December 9th, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m., (SCENE) Metrospace presents "GENERATIONS: a night of poetry & music."

"generations: a night of poetry & music" is a benefit for The Listening Ear Crisis Center with proceeds going toward the Capital Area Sexual Assault Response Center, a community-wide, years-long endeavor by Greater-Lansing advocacy groups.

The suggested donation is $5-$10.

"generations" delivers collaborative performances by poet Melissa Dey Hasbrook, oboist Gretchen Morse (Lansing Symphony Orchestra), and band The Heads. The artists chose poems from Hasbrook's book "Circle...Home," around which the music will flow.

The program explores the impact of war throughout generations, whose survival offers hope and inspiration despite cycles of violence. The event observes the international campaign 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence (Nov. 25 - Dec. 10) with its 2012 theme, calling for an end to militarism and gender violence.

This activity is made possible in part by a grant from the Arts Council of Greater Lansing http://www.facebook.com/ArtsCouncilGL.

Partners include the RCAH Center for Poetry at MSU and Peace Education Center of Greater Lansing.

Missingtoe Mistletoe

On Friday, Dec. 2nd, the Ruhala improv group, Just Clownin’ Improv, will bring an improv comedy performance called “Missingtoe Mistletoe” to (SCENE)’s stage.

The Sixth Species Ensemble

Together, (SCENE) Metrospace and The Record Lounge have pooled their resources to bring the community excellent savings and great opportunities to purchase unique art and music. (SCENE) Metrospace will be open from noon-6 p.m. and The Record Lounge will be open from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. There are no admission fees for this holiday sale event.

The written and spoken-word open mic bridges Transgender Day of Remembrance (Nov. 20) and the international campaign 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence (Nov. 25 – Dec. 10). The program celebrates gender expression; challenges militarism and gender violence; and honors Trans gender and Two Spirit voices. The event features lesbian poet Bobbi Byrd from Osseo, Michigan. Kyle Nelson Pentecost is a Lansing native who has been playing the local music scene for the past two years, appearing at open mic nights and various venues, including Basement 414 and (SCENE) Metrospace. Poetic Visions Tour

On Saturday, November 12, (SCENE) Metrospace, 110 Charles St., will host Poetic Visions, with opening musical act Wisaal.

This national traveling concert tour features spiritually inspired folk music and hip hop poetry performed by prominent Muslim musicians. It is part of a national tour that chooses musicians/songwriters that move beyond simple, one dimensional songs and reconnect to the great classical Muslim writers such as Rumi, Attar, Imam Shafai, Imam Ali, Muhammad Iqbal, as well as great Western poets such as Shakespeare, Milton, Dante and Bob Dylan. The Arabic fusion group Wisaal hails from East Lansing.

This event is organized by the MSU Muslim Studies Program as part Migrations of Islam, a multifaceted project focused on Muslim American cultural expression. They can be found at facebook.com/islammigrations.

(SCENE) Metrospace has partnered with the Student Greenhouse Project of Michigan State University for a unique event. The Student Greenhouse Project is having a design competition!

The 14/4 Student Design Competition

On October 23rd, at 4:00 p.m. in room 119 of the Psychology Building, across from Snyder Phillips Hall, the Student Design Competition will unleashing a design competition.

The 14/4 Design Competition gives competitors 14 days to produce designs for a facility, advertising campaign or new name for the Project. Then they have 4 minutes to present their idea to a judging panel for cash prizes of $200 for 1st place and $100 for 2nd place in each of the three categories.

Event Timeline:

October 23, 4:00 p.m., Psychology Building room 119, Registration – participants receive design specs, instructions and guidance.

November 5, 5:30 p.m., Participants give notification of their intent to display a submission in the competition.

November 6, 4:00 p.m., Entries brought to (Scene) Metrospace, 110 Charles St., E. Lansing.

November 6, 7:00 p.m., Competitors begin their 4-minute presentations.

November 10 – 13, (Scene) Metrospace displays entries for public input to the judging.

November 12, Finalists are selected and notified.

November 13, 4:00 p.m., Awards Ceremony, at (SCENE) Metrospace, finalists must be in attendance to receive recognition and cash prize winnings. Winners will also be recognized on our Facebook page.

Drawing-Based Exhibition at (SCENE) Metrospace

FROM SEPTEMBER 8TH UNTIL OCTOBER 23RD, (SCENE) Metrospace presents "Raw Materials" and "Skins."

The "Raw Materials" exhibit, curated by Robert McCann, features work by Martha MacLeish, Elizabeth Huey, Christopher Lowrance, Jeffrey Allen Price, Michelle Word, and Andrew Rieder.

Robert McCann writes that "Raw Materials" explores drawing work used as preparation or sourcing for other artwork. These studio drawings exist on the edge between being the most potent expression of an artistic idea and not quite art at all.

In the "Skins" exhibit, local artists were invited to submit artwork with drawings and/or designs that could easily be seen being “lifted” and ultimately reproduced as skins for portable electronic devices.

Featured artists include Dennis Preston, Amanda Orr, Eufoe, Bethanne Harms, Thomas McArdle and Celeste Hay.

Note: A “skin” is a thin protective and/or designer layer that can be applied to the surface of a portable device, such as a laptop, iPod or cell phone, thereby giving a drab device some extra protection and personal flair.

Spitfire Poetry Slam featuring JG the Jugganaut

The Spitfire Poetry Slam is hosted by Joseph Harris, aka Logic. Special guest, John Gibson, aka JG the Jugganaut, will be the event's feature poet.

Jugganaut he has recorded two albums, performed at BET’s Spring Bling, the SXSW music festival in Austin, TX, been nominated for two Ohio Hip Hop Awards, hosted two open mic shows, and has traveled all around the country performing poetry.

JG credits an encounter with renowned poet, Dasha Kelly, as a defining moment in which he first felt he could be a good poet, and he has been gracing microphones with his gift ever since. In 2007, he got his first big gig as the host of Soul Soup held at the legendary Café 290 in Atlanta, GA.

The Things We Said: A Poetry Reading

(SCENE) Metrospace presents two local poets, Angela Vasquez-Giroux Wittrock and boog, reading poems that center around their responses to the war in Iraq.

Angela Vasquez-Giroux Wittrock is an associate producer for MLive Lansing. Her e-chap, Letters to My Sister, can be found at www.revelatorpress.blogspot.com.

Composed as a series of letters to a family member serving in Iraq, Angela Vasquez-Giroux's first poetry chapbook is a vivid evocation of the fear, displacement, and uncertainty that war imposes on those who are left behind. Through images of fragmentation and fragility—misreadings of scripture, partial glimpses of a loved one in a news report—Letters to My Sister speaks of the challenges of survival, both for those in the field and at home.

The reading commemorates the first reading of "Bombing" which took place at Cafe Latte--(SCENE) Metrospace's current location. The cafe was a platform for poetry and performance in the early years of the last decade.

The MSU Art Department's 5th annual DRAWING MARATHON takes place on Thursday, September 22nd. Held just outside the Kresge Art Center from 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM, the marathon includes mural boards for collaborative drawing as well as costumed models in rotation throughout the day.

In the evening, the events will extend to Scene Metrospace Gallery in East Lansing, where two drawing shows are on view. Beyond the exhibition receptions, drawing activities will continue. These activities include an experimental interactive performance by Department of Theater students based in movement and composition that blurs the line between performer and audience, artist and subject.

We provide water (and snacks at the Scene Metrospace portion of the event), sunscreen, drawing materials, and paper. The event is free and open to the public...all you need to do is come prepared to draw!

Hey Scenesters, the gallery is currently closed as we prepare for our next art exhibition, which will focus on different aspects of drawing and design. The gallery will quietly reopen for regular hours on Thursday, September 8th.

We're doing something different for the reception of this exhibition. The reception party will take place on September 22nd. It will be held in conjunction with a great gallery event: the Michigan State University art department's Drawing Marathon. This will be a fun, creative event for artists who want to participate, and for those who just want to observe and hang out!

The exhibition borrows its title from the Facebook term for removing a person from one’s "friends list." Artists were ask to consider the idea of being "unfriended" personally, publicly, globally, and environmentally.

Some ideas considered were notions of social pressure within today’s social networking platforms, the effects of technology on today’s society, personal loss, childhood, and the relationship of industry with the environment.

The exhibit will close on Sunday, August 21st, 2011, at 4:00 p.m.

Community Dance Project (Happendance) Performs at (SCENE)

Once again, on Friday, August 5th, (SCENE) Metrospace is hosting two dance performances by Community Dance Project and Happendance!

The first performance is at 7:00. This performance will be followed by a repeat performance at 8:00.

This event is free and open to the public.

(SCENE) Metrospace is located at 110 Charles Street, Downtown East Lansing, under the multicolored parking ramp.

The program will present dances with smaller casts ranging from 1-5 dancers, including works by Clara Martinez, a dance major at Ohio State University (recently ranked the #1 dance program in the country), as well as works by Okemos High School seniors, Grace French and Lea-Janelle Mitchell, who will be attending the prestigious Hartt Conservatory for Dance on scholarship in the fall.

Since 1977, the company has performed in a variety of local theatrical venues -- school auditoriums, Impression 5 Museum, Wharton Center Pasant Theatre, Fairchild Auditorium, Riverwalk Theater, Hannah Community Center, and Dart Auditorium -- featuring their own works and those of notable guest artists.

In addition, Happendance has for many years been in the Michigan Humanities Council's adjudicated Touring Arts Directory, and performed in Michigan venues and nearby states. Highlights of recent years include an interdisciplinary concert series at Links Hall in Chicago, a series of Isadora Duncan dances at the Detroit Institute of Art, commissioned works for Lansing's Sesquicentennial celebrations, and a collaborative concert with Lansing Symphony Orchestra.

Strange attractor is a band that is expirimental sounds and poetic existentialism. A strange attractor is the pattern set parameter in a chaos system that seems to behave as order for chaotic fractalization. As the Poet Chris Conn speaks,the keyboardist Dimitri Valdes performs psychedelic noise and sound effects. Strange attractor is an ambient trance juggernaut of impact that speaks both to the sane and insane thoughts questioning what is truly real. It is a fine art of a new genre pioneering to the colonies on the frontier of enlightenment. Please watch the show at your own risk.

After Strange Attractor comes Liquid Salamander, a psychedelic jam band with singer/keyboardist Dimitri Valdes on vocals,and Chris Soderman on drums ,and a few guest guitarists. They perform music with a range of emotions from dark gothic to light joyous spiritual rock n' roll, creating sort of a gypsy dreamscape of music and song.

Wisaal - an Arabic word meaning links, connections, or unities - reflects our attempt to fuse elements of the Arabic musical heritage with Klezmer, Indian, and American influences while respecting the spirit of these traditions. Classical Arabic pieces become frameworks within which traditional Arabic forms and rhythmic patterns blend with Western harmonic backgrounds and rhythmically charged pop and world-music grooves. Traditional Arabic instruments - oud, percussion, and bass - are joined by Klezmer-influenced clarinet, American folk mandolin, and Indian tabla. Contemporary fusion pieces and original compositions combine these various influences and allow for extended improvisations which showcase the different improvisatory traditions represented in Wisaal. Based in East Lansing, Michigan, Wisaal aims to increase awareness of these musical traditions and their cultures through performances and educational workshops.

The Anatomy of Frank brings prog-pop a new meaning. Armed with an unending slew of instruments and gadgets, they make meaningful music that swells and hushes, charms and seduces, explodes and falls apart. They are The Anatomy of Frank, and they believe that music is good for nearly everything.

Diane Wakoski Tribute

On Thursday, May 12th, at 7:00 p.m, (SCENE) Metrospace will host a tribute poetry reading for distinguished Michigan State University professor and poet-in-residence, Diane Wakoski. The event is free and open to the public.

Diane Wakoski has been the Michigan State University poet-in-residence since 1975. She is the author of over forty volumes of poetry, including her most recent collection, The Diamond Dog, published in 2010 by Anhinga Press.

Featured readers at the tribute will include the poets Heather Abner, MJ Arredondo, Geoffrey Bankowski, boog, Courtney Chapin, Kierstyn Lamour, Tim Lane, Ruth Mowry, Carrie Preston, Sarah Sword, and Angela Vasquez-Giroux.

The event will culminate with poems read by Diane Wakoski.

This event, which is free and open to the public, has been graciously sponsored by the Michigan State University English Department.

(SCENE) Metrospace will unveil its latest exhibit, “Graffiti: The Second Installation,” on Friday, May 6th at a free public reception from 6-9 p.m. Members of the community are encouraged to attend.

The exhibition, to be featured in the space May 6th-June 26th, is the gallery’s second graffiti show and includes the creative work of graffiti artists who have turned their focus to commissioned graffiti installations aimed at improving a beautiful and creative environment.

This latest exhibit features work by Army, Ward, Eufoe, BRZM, Peru, Tuna, Melo and Metal Arm.

Community members are encouraged to stop by (SCENE) Metrospace and experience the full potential of a spray can when utilized by the hands of creative, thoughtful and brilliant young minds.

GRAB IT! is a work for “ghettoblaster,” tenor saxophone and video that cuts up parts of the 1970s film "Scared Straight" written by Dutch composer Jacob ter Velduis.

Masculin Féminin is a setting of spoken poetry by Bethany Austin-Smith joined by spatialized clarinet sounds in a video setting by Sam Merciers.

There will also be a live improvisation between pianist and composer Alex Kreger and VJ artist Deon Foster.

On Friday, April 1st at East Lansing’s (SCENE) Metrospace, the Americana roots duo Red Tail Ring (Michael Beauchamp and Laurel Premo) will release two new CDs: one of original songs and the other their take on traditional tunes. Along with vocal harmonies, the twosome play fiddle and guitar, take turns on the banjo, every then and now pick up the mandolin, jaw harp or harmonica, and sometimes turn to plain-old stomping to bring audiences their brand of newly-minted old-time ballads and instrumentals. Michigan artists Elden Kelly and Bobby Bringi collaborate to seamlessly synthesize melodic and rhythmic elements of jazz, delta blues, Indian ragas, bluegrass, African, Latin and Middle Eastern influences to create a new music that is fresh, original, and inspired -- Global Roots Music.

Wisaal, an Arabic fusion ensemble based at the Michigan State University College of Music, was formed in February 2010. Wisaal is an Arabic word meaning links, connections, or unities. This reflects our attempt to present high-quality concert and educational presentations of music that fuse elements of the Arabic musical heritage with Klezmer (Jewish dance music), Classical Indian, and American influences while respecting the spirit of these musics. Wisaal’s repertoire consists of Classical Arabic instrumental pieces, contemporary fusion pieces, and our compositions.

Classical Arabic instrumental pieces from the twentieth century become frameworks within which traditional Arabic forms and rhythmic patterns blend with Western harmonic backgrounds and rhythmically charged pop and world-music grooves. Wisaal has been active in creating projects and finding performing opportunities. Wisaal recorded a demo cd in March/April 2010 and updated it in January 2011; performed in various galleries and venues in the Mid-Michigan area such as SCENE Metrospace (East Lansing), Michigan Historical Museum, Elderly Instruments, Art Alley and Creole Gallery (Lansing) and Art Reach Center of Mid-Michigan (Mount Pleasant); opened for a reading by the Arab American poet, Suheir Hammad, when she came to Michigan State University in March 2010; performed in Detroit for the Arab American community. Wisaal’s highlight was performing one piece at the Wharton Center Cobb Great Hall to a packed house in the Collage Concert, an event hosted by MSU’s College of Music.

The Public & the Private features work by photographer Ellie Brown and filmmaker/performance artist Camille Thoman. The exhibit includes work from Brown and Thoman's collaborative project "BAG."

BAG is a photographic installation exploring the duality between the way people characterize themselves in public, and the private contents of their handbags. This is depicted by a photograph of the subject against a neutral background, in their everyday clothes, with their bag, purse, briefcase or any other container they carry on a daily basis. The portrait of their public face is juxtaposed with the person’s more private self, represented by the actual contents of their bag.

BAG allows the viewer a glimpse into the private world of another individual, revealing aspects of this person’s organizational habits, vanities and preoccupations.

The Private & the Public also features work by local artists Aaron Curtner, Lynn Gareau, Christopher Gideon, Susan Hensel, John Kroneman, Robert Park and Eric Robinson.

And, finally, the exhibit includes a cross-section of email correspondence between two lifelong friends--both poets, avid readers, and former competitive chess players--and a selection of rejection letters received by local writer, Gavin Craig.

Aaron went to Texas and caught birds. He stayed in an apartment complex with a view of a McDonalds sign and if there were sidewalks in Temple, TX he could have walked to the Lowes and Circuit City which were three gas stations down. And so, when he wasn't catching birds, he sat on the floor (having no furniture) and wrote most of these songs.

In celebration of the thriving Michigan folk music community, (SCENE) Metrospace will host a lineup of some of the most talented and sought-after singer-songwriters in Michigan and beyond. The event will take place in the evening on Friday, February 11th, and Saturday, February 12th.

The Friday performers include Photographers, Steve Leaf and Ryan Anderson, Nervous But Excited, and Jen Sygit and Sam Corbin. The Saturday night performers include Doug Mains, Gifts or Creatures, Small Houses, and Chris Bathgate.

The music begins each night at 8pm at 11O Charles Street in Downtown East Lansing. Tickets are $10 each night and only available at the door. Limited seating available. Doors open at 7pm.

On January 14th, (SCENE) Metrospace will unveil the first exhibition of 2011, Six for Six: Six MSU Artists for Six Weeks, featuring Jesse Howell, Tomo Kobayashi, A.M. Martens, Bryan Prillwitz, Steven Stradley and Deborah Wheeler.

As these Michigan State University Masters of Fine Arts candidates prepare for their final university exhibition, (SCENE) Metrospace is pleased to capture an early look at the honed focus of some of their most recent efforts and explorations.

Please join us at 110 Charles Street for the opening reception on Friday evening, January 14th, from 6-9 p.m. The opening is free and open to the public.

The exhibition will run from January 14th until February 27th. Regular gallery hours are Thursdays, 2-5; Fridays and Saturdays, 2-6; Sundays, 12-4; and by appointment.

Community members are invited to the public opening of ResVU 1 & 2 – (SCENE) Metrospace’s final exhibition of 2010 – on Friday, Oct. 29 from 6-9 p.m. The opening is free and the exhibition will be on display in the gallery space through Sunday, Dec. 12.

The title of the show, ResVU 1 & 2, refers to a new, alternative bi-annual publication and performance series entitled ResCollecTiVU. With a goal of creating community through art and artists, local resident and ResCollecTiVU editor Corrina Van Hamlin put a call out for local artist submissions to be compiled in a series of bi-annual publications that showcase the creative talent of the region.

With overwhelming response, Van Hamlin has designed her first two issues of ResCollecTiVU, “The Makers” and “Black & White.” Both issues include poetry, photography, art, graphics and more by artists from the Greater Lansing area, Michigan State University (MSU) and MSU’s Residential College of the Arts and Humanities.

With the ResVU 1 & 2 exhibit, (SCENE) Metrospace will feature artwork showcased in Van Hamlin’s first two issues and will also host events during the duration of the exhibition showcasing the talent of the creative individuals captured in both issues. We are used to music being presented from directly in front of us. By contrast, sounds in the real world surround us on all sides. Sound in Space presents music by Mark Applebaum, John Cage, Junghae Lee, and Sam Merciers that places sound sources around the performance space.

Sound in Space involves a variety of media, from orchestral instruments to folk instruments to electronics and live video.

Immediately following the concert, we will perform Phil Kline's Unsilent Night, a walking sound sculpture in which we all carry boomboxes around town playing a different CD from the composer. We invite and encourage everyone to bring CD player boomboxes to the concert and join us for Unsilent Night!

What is this, you might ask? Written by downtown NYC composer Phil Kline, Unsilent Night is an outdoor ambient music piece for an infinite number of boomboxes. When performed in the confines of a city, Unsilent Night reverberates off the buildings and streets, resulting in a drifting cloud of ethereal undulating sound. In effect, performers become a single element in a two-block-long stereo system. The Village Voice describes Unsilent Night as "a marvelously fluid, traveling spatial sound sculpture that disintegrates and reforms at nearly every stop light." Time Out calls the event "an electro-happening" and depicts the music as "a winter wonderland of shimmering sleigh bells, chimes and grand chorales."

Unsilent Night East Lansing has been carried on by a growing number of holiday revelers from the greater Lansing area, Ann Arbor, and the MSU community. For the second year in a row, we’re partnering with the folks at the (SCENE) Metrospace gallery as our event home. We’re looking to increase our numbers even more from the local and greater mid-Michigan communities. Want to get hip to the holiday spirit with our boombox symphony? Since its debut in 1992, Unsilent Night has become a cult holiday tradition in NY and around the world, drawing crowds of up to 1,500 participants. This year will see repeat presentations in San Francisco, Philadelphia, San Diego, Vancouver BC, Middlesbrough (England) and Sydney, Australia, as well as the first ever performances in Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Baltimore, Charleston, Rochester, Milledgeville (Georgia), and Banff (Alberta, Canada). In February 2006, a new version of Unsilent Night was presented at the Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy, as part of a sound art festival in the Alps.

Hailing from Williamsburg, VA, Mark Kroos is one of the only touring double neck guitarists in the world. His style is characterized by open harmonies, polyphonic textures, incredible tapping technique and is as entertaining to watch as it is to listen to. Influenced by folk, Celtic, Indie, and even punk rock artists--as well as other great acoustic guitarist such as Michael Hedges, Andy Mckee and Justin King--Mark Kroos has developed his own edge to the acoustic guitar.

Moyindau: jazz with an Eastern European flavor

Featuring Alex Kreger (piano/compositions), Kevin Bene (saxophones), Susanna Mendlow (cello) and Ryan Ptasnik (drums).

The group Moyindau explores the territory between jazz and contemporary classical music, improvised and notated forms. Its unique instrumentation without a bassist frees the ensemble from the hierarchy associated with the traditional roles of the rhythm section, allowing each instrument a chameleonic flexibility to serve multiple functions and resulting in constantly shifting textures. Familiar grooves are displaced and disassembled, while elements of contemporary classical music typically perceived as inaccessible are presented in the context of familiar grooves and pop music sensibilities.

The ensemble also draws from ethnic folk traditions of cultures across the world, an influence perhaps best explained by the group's beginning as the backup band for vocal settings of Kazakh poetry.

(SCENE) Metrospace, 110 Charles St., will unveil its latest exhibit, “Creative Community,” at a special public opening on Friday, Sept. 10 from 6-9 p.m. The opening reception is free and members of the public are welcome to attend.

With the “Creative Community” exhibit, (SCENE) Metrospace issued a call to the community to participate in three sub-exhibits designed to provide creative individuals with an opportunity to show some of their creative flair.

The “Profile Pics” sub-exhibit (yes, think Facebook™) invited community members to submit up to five serious or silly profiles of themselves (or their family, friends and alter egos) in any format. Photos, paintings and more were accepted.

The “Studio Space” sub-exhibit invited creative people to send in physical documentation of their studios or the space where they create. While most participants sent in photos, other formats were encouraged and accepted.

The “Unrealized Ideas” sub-exhibit asked people to send in some form of physical documentation of art projects or other creative ideas that had never actually been executed for reasons such as a lack of funding. Helena Trindade, of Brazil, provided an ideal submission for this exhibit. She has never been able to find the funding to see her billboards project completed, however; her metallic photos of what the project would look like in real life are beautiful, as is her majestic, unrealized idea.

In a fourth sub-exhibit, (SCENE) Metrospace is pleased to present six pieces from the personal collection of East Lansing resident Henry Brimmer, a graphic designer, photographer and editor of the magazine “Photometro.” This sub-exhibit is being presented in anticipation of initiating a monthly gallery talk series in the near future called, "I Collect."
